Sunday, May 5th at 8:15 PM – Yorkminster Park organ concert to commemorate 850th anniversary of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris

850nortedameYorkminster Park Baptist Church cordially invites its Neighbourhood Interfaith friends and the community at large to a special organ concert to commemorate the 850th anniversary of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. Admission for this concert is free and all are welcome.

In 1163, on Île de la Cité, then a suburb of Paris, construction commenced on the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, in English “Our Lady of Paris” (Notre-Dame). Today, Notre-Dame with its soaring architecture, magnificent flying buttresses, outstanding organ and magnificent acoustics endures. It is a World Heritage site.

In honour of Notre Dame’s 850th anniversary, more than 850 organ recitals are planned throughout the world. These recitals will recognize this anniversary as well as the recent renovation of the Grand Organ of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame.

At Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, the Director of Music, Mr. William Maddox, will be presenting a special Notre Dame organ recital at 8:15 PM on Sunday, May 5th. The concert will be presented on Yorkminster Park’s magnificent Casavant organ, considered one of the finest in Toronto.

This concert will include compositions by Louis Vierne, Maurice Duruflé and Charles-Marie Widor (who played the Notre Dame organ when dedicated in 1868 and again in 1932 when the organ was rededicated). The music of Louis Vierne is also part of the Notre-Dame repertoire for World Organ Day.

Yorkminster Park Baptist Church is at 1585 Yonge Street, on the north-east corner of Yonge and Heath Street East. The church is located just one block north of the St. Clair subway station and the Route 512 St. Clair streetcar. Free parking is available in the church lot, accessible via Glen Elm Avenue (one block north of Heath on the east side of Yonge).
